Pfizer Inc., the world’s largest pharmaceutical company, is about to lose its monopoly over erectile dysfunction drugs.
Pfizer’s patent on Viagra, which is expected to expire this year, has been going for a while. It was approved last year by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
But Pfizer said it was disappointed and no other company would be allowed to enter the market. In addition to Viagra, it is still seeking patent protection for erectile dysfunction drugs such as Cialis and Levitra.
But Pfizer’s new venture, Cialis Connect, could come with a price tag of $65 per pill. The two drugs are the most popular among men seeking erectile dysfunction treatment, according to a Pfizer press release.
Pfizer has yet to discuss the matter with the FDA. However, Cialis and Levitra are already available in the U. S. and could be a good alternative for men seeking treatment.
If approved, Pfizer’s product would have U. sales of $2.5 billion this year.
“We are very excited about Pfizer’s chances of being able to enter the market into the next decade,” said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of the Public Citizen Health Research Group.
Pfizer said in a statement: “We are disappointed and are committed to evaluating the benefits and potential risks of our innovative treatments for erectile dysfunction.”
Pfizer said in a statement it would be filing suit against Cialis, Levitra and Viagra. The patent for the products expires in the spring of 2011.
